The label HMV HAMBURGERMODELBAUBOGEN VERLAG was
founded in 1995 as a subsidiary of SCHEUER & STRÜVER (sorry only in German) of Hamburg and is producing since then high quality cardbord
models, most ships. The implementation of HMV was back then born out of a
missing of high quality cardbord models.

The publishers of HMV wanted to
create from their very heat, and from the first beginning constructive
qualified and high grad printed cardbord models. Their concept created a story
of success. The model builders / customers are of all age groups, from the young
to the old.

Till 2009 HMV was part of SCHEUER
& STRÜVER GmbH and was distributed worldwide via the companies distribution
network. End of 2009 the former chief of marketing, Ulrike Fentens, became
owner of SCHEUER & STRÜVER, since then the company is renamed as FENTENPRODUCTIONS - FB site.

"FENTENS PRODUCTIONS and HMV
are one and the same," stated Benjamin Fentens at the INTERMODELBAU fair in
Dortmund. He stated further: "The close and trustworthy collaboration
between publisher and the engineers was and is guaranteed, and leads to a
consistent development of publishings. The "old" constructors did not
leave back then and is enlarged over the years. Loving to try the
possibilities, and the willingness to enrepreneural risks, implemented the way
even to new methods of production. Consequently, the first cardbord model was
designed with the then most modern technology, the sms SACHSEN. Even if the
SACHSEN was drawn by hand, prior to the offset-print the construction work was
digital coloured. Today all cardbord models are created and produced digital
with CAD programs. But the printing is still the good old offset printing." And with a slight gleam in his eyes Mr. Fentens stated: "Our
constructors are driven by their love for the ships and their passion, and
passion they need for their ambitious work." He is doing constructions
too, he confessed to me.

For the high quality reproduction
of the vessels GA´s (Generalarragement Plans) or construction plans are needed.
Further lots of photographies, best in colour or realistic paintings.
The lean management structure of
FENTENS PRODUCTIONS enables the company for short time reaktions on market
trends and eventually consumer wishes that are the same as the market trend
shows. "Otherwise you will have 1,400 ideas of 1,000 modellers you may
ask." Earl of Cruise. And HMV is and was in the center of interest in the company.
About the best sellers of the
publishings Mr. Fentens told me: "All new publishings are sold like warm
bread."
HMV models overview - courtsey HMV
The number of new publishings
could be enlarged over the years, as in the past announced publishings are in
the pipeline and will be published over the next few years. I learned there
will be published next a FRANCE 1:250 model, as well a 1:250 model of CANBERRA.
But the most interesting news to me was, the construction work for the
NORMANDIE 1:250 model. Further the new constructions are focussing on historic
passenger ships. And with that I learned too of the idea to publish a 1:250
model of HANSEATIC 2, ex SHALOM of the late DEUTSCHE ATLANTIK LINIE of genius
Axel Bitsch-Christensen.
"A man, from Denmark, who did show the shippowners in Hamburg how a new state-of-the-art passenger shipping line and cruise company could work. He introduced as a first a new model of financing for the vessels, as well new sales lines, and marketing strategies. Even if the founding was with some sort of assistance by the Eugenides brothers, he created a famed shipping company."

Cardbord model construction
Components printed on paper or
cardboard which are cut, folded and glued together and from which a model is
created/constructed - that is cardbord model construction. Nothing more,
nothing less.
HMV cardbord models are elaborate
and model-designed, offset-printed and have an extensive and almost always an
illustrated manual. The components are grooved, cut out and then folded and
glued together. The adhesive bonds are effected by means of so-called adhesive
bags. The cardbord on which HMV models are printed is a specially selected and
tested paper for this purpose with special properties and a weight of 170gr/m².

HMV models have always stood for
special model loyalty. And the material makes it possible. The paper used
corresponds to a steel plate of 3.5 cm (for the scale 1: 250) with a thickness
of approx. 0.15 mm. And also as regards the properties of paper, it can be said
that our material is the scale reduction of steel. What is more beautiful for
modeling? Accordingly, the hulls, superstructures and details of our ships can
be built and manufactured almost as with the original. This also results in the
need to use interior structures. As in the case of the original, the frame is
first built and then the deck and the side wall are attached. Along with the
numerous details, models are found that do not need to shy away from
comparison, and include the most detailed and best of what is possible today in
the model construction sector.

Cardboard model construction is suitable
for living rooms. With a few tools, a cutting mat and a bit of glue, highly
detailed models can be built. And only eventually you will need a bit of colour
to cover not well cut parts. The space requirement is low and the workplace
quickly cleans up. There are no toxic fumes caused by varnishing, and when
using odorless white glue, no solvents interfere with other family members. A
wonderful and family-friendly hobby, therefore, which does not require a
separate workshop and has little space. Well - this is only true, because the
built models want to be exhibited. But according to our experience, there is
always a nice place, which appeals to all family members.
Some parts can not be produced
from the printed sheet. Here, a few additional materials are used. For the
rigging, for example, or the reinforcement of the masts. Especially filigreed
parts can be replaced with the HMV laser cutting cuts. These details,
especially developed for each model, include, for example, railings, antennas,
davits and other small parts which are difficult to cut out.
Even with the best tools and with
the highest quality of the HMV model building, an experienced model builder
always meets the limits. Of course, it is possible to cut railings, but not
everyone is so calm hands and fingers allowed. So the question arises, how can
a model with the high quality of the HMV still further refined.
Previously, the solution approach
was the photoetching technique. HMV models can undoubtedly be refurbished with
photoet etching, but the effort is high. The difficulties lie with the processing.
Etching sets have to be painted and just the elimination of painting work is a
big advantage of cardboard model construction. And then comes the question of
gluing. Metal and paper can not be easily combined. Added to this is the high
environmental impact of the production process and the ever-increasing cost of
photoetching parts.
In the meantime, however, laser
technology has developed so far that, for several years now, really good laser
cutting machines have become affordable for companies of our size. Since the
beginning of 2010 the HMV has been producing its own laser cutting kits for its
models.
HMV laser cutting kits are made
of colored paper. As a rule, the hue is identical or almost identical with the
printed part from the sheet. A color treatment is therefore normally not
necessary - apart from white parts. But more in the tips & tricks section
on our website. It can happen that 15 different
materials are used in one set.

Mr. Jabietz has done an incredibly good model construction! In his blog, he is giving some usefull hints for constructing a near perfect model.
For technical reasons, all parts
must be redrawn. A simple takeover from the model sheet or from the previous
photoet sets is unfortunately not possible. Of course, we use the same to a
generous rework of the restorations and often found in the Lasercutset parts,
which were not contained in the former photoet set. In addition, there is
simply more possibility in the lasercut process. For example, a bow artworks
made of golden paper can actually be lasered three-dimensionally. Even if one
does not see with the eye, one perceives this filigree in the overall
impression. So you can confidently say that the HMV laser cutting kits will
make our models as detailed and perfect as never before.
"It is planned to publish
laser cuts for all existing and coming HMV models, at least as far as it makes
sense. Unfortunately this is not as fast as we wish. It is precisely because
each part has to be redrawn, instructions have to be developed again, and we
are now also busy developing new models. For the larger part of the HMV models,
the laser sets are already available and we are constantly drawing further,"
said Mr. Fentens.

I will come back to the models
that will be published next. The FRANCE, the CANBERRA and then NORMANDIE ... When
we did talk about the design/construction work for NORMANDIE Mr. Fenten said
with gleaming eyes: "something from a dream,
the grandest, unrivaled, never reached, the perfect liner, therefore it is a
neccessaty creating a perfect constructed model of NORMANDIE to be published in
the future." Mr. Fenten assured me, NORMANDIE will be published definitely.
The exact date for is depending on the forthcoming of the construction works
for the print of the cardbord model. Which will definitely be not flimsy. They
even think of the interiors to be rebuild, such as the Grand Salon and the Café
Grill ... A similar ambitious, reproduction of interior salons had been done
for the CAP ARCONA (soon to be republished) and the BREMEN. Both models have sets integrated for the
dining rooms, where with CAP ARCONA the whole salon deck can be reconstructed
and be seen via opened doors and windows.
As depicted in the pictures above, a cardbord model is far from being flimsy. It is depending on your skills to create a perfect model. And as so many detail loving model constructors, there is a vast opportunity to "super" a model ... You may have the wish integrating a sound system, for the typhon/horn or recreating the noise when droping of the anchor ... AVT PRODUCTS would have the loudspeakers for.
