May the 5,7m / 20ft MERCEDES MAYBACH LAND YACHT 6 CABIOLET, shutdown ROLLS ROYCE?

And why all of a sudden an essay about a car - but a true vision of luxury and style? And toping it, enviromental friendly!
by Earl of Cruise

The glamorous cabriolet reinterprets classic, ART DÉCO, emotional design principles in an extravagant way and combines intelligent beauty with classic, aesthetic, nearly erotic, proportions and a reduced, technoid appearance - a perfect embodiment of the design philosophy of Sensual Purity.

The COUPÉ is reciting classical elements of e.g. a BUGATTI 57 ATLANTIC, as well from own historic MERCEDES cars, as the 540k Roadster and 540K Coupé AUTOBAHNKURIER. And when it is coming to style and elegance, ART DÉCO is used to cover it. ART DÉCO is last global design movement.

The Vision MERCEDES MAYBACH LAND YACHT 6 Cabriolet is designed as an electric car. The drive system has an output of 750 hp (550 kW). The shallow underfloor battery allows a range of over 500 kilometers. Okay the batteries production is not that super enviromental friendly, as the recharging is transfering the NOX and SOX pollution to the power stations. The fastest recharging will be in 5 minutes only.

At this year's gathering of the most magnificent classic cars at Pebble Beach in California, MERCEDES-BENZ is once again set to present a highlight: the Vision MERCEDES MAYBACH LAND YACHT 6 Cabriolet is a car which, with its sensual, emotionally appealing design and innovative technical concept solutions, defines the ultimate in luxury of the future. At the same time the two-seater model pays homage to the glorious "automotive haute couture" of hand-finished, exclusive cabriolets.

With poor sales expectations and the heavy impact of the 2007-08 financial crisis, Daimler AG undertook a complete review of the MAYBACH division, approaching ASTON MARTIN to engineer and style the next generation of MAYBACH models along with the next generation of Lagondas.

MAYBACH 57S - Source: Wikipedia Too much od a mee-to product, and too mediocre, only expensive

The MAYBACH models 57 and 62, as the Landualet had been too much much of a MERCEDES S Class model, than an own car. It was a blown up "gold glittered" W140, produced from 1991-98. That model had its good implementations, but all in all it was a dinosaure on wheels.

The MAYBACH 57 and 62 resembled exactly what the real luxury clientele do not want to have - faked luxury. That may attract wanna-bees and show-offs, or nouveau riche lacking taste but have a tendency for bragging.

According to Automotive News, only 44 MAYBACHs had been sold in the U.S. through October 2011. An article in FORTUNE noted that MERCEDES had missed out on the chance to purchase ROLLS-ROYCE and BENTLEY when they were up for sale in the 1990s "MERCEDES backpedaled and decided it needed to be in the ultra-luxury business too, but it went after it in a remarkably clumsy way." It further stated" ... that the first MAYBACH models had poor driving dynamics compared to its contemporaries from ROLLS-ROYCE and BENTLEY: "MERCEDES took an aging S-class chassis and plopped an absurdly elongated body on it ... rather than develop a new car from the wheels up, as BMW did with ROLLS-ROYCE, or cleverly use the underpinnings of an existing model like the VOLKSWAGEN PHAETON for a new BENTLEY." Furthermore, "MAYBACH´s were never advertised as owner-driven vehicles, as the company believed that the luxury amenities would be sufficient to drive sales, and they even insisted that auto journalists (who usually test drive the vehicle) ride in the backseat." Another suggestion for MAYBACH's struggles was that parent DAIMLER AG had failed to differentiate it from its MERCEDES-BENZ brand. While all three ultra-luxury marques share platforms and engines with other luxury brands from their parent auto company, MAYBACH´s are built alongside the MERCEDES-BENZ S Class flagship sedan, whereas ROLLS-ROYCE and BENTLEY are assembled in England (separate from the rest of BMW and VOLKSWAGEN Group's respective production plants), and thus are regarded as being more "exclusive". Furthermore, the MAYBACH's pedigree was virtually unknown outside of Germany, unlike its British rivals which have long enjoyed renown worldwide; indeed the 2006 ROLLS-ROYCE PHANTOM's interior evokes memories of a 1930s ART DÉCO car while the MAYBACH 57S's inside makes no reference to its marque's history..the interior was a mediocre mixture of what was thought to be luxurious ... And an individualizing WEMPE design was not of any help. Only a gltzing up of an excecutive vehicle. November 2011, Daimler's CEO Dieter Zetsche announced that the MAYBACH-brand would cease to exist in 2012, making room for other models of the MERCEDES-BENZ S-Class and being reduced to a state of interior outfitting.

Then came MERCEDES MAYBACH 6 COUPÉ in August 2016 and CABRIOLET in August 2017. But this MAYBACH called outfitting and style variation, may the beginning of a real rebirth.
The MAYBACH 6 CABRIOLET called MERCEDES is measuring almost 6 meters in length, the Vision MERCEDES MAYBACH 6 CABRIOLET and COUPÉ incorporate the classic proportions of ART DÉCO design with their extremely long hoods and puristic, streamlined flowing lines, and at the same time totally reinterpret the ART DÉCO aesthetic principles. The curved body boasts a sporty, stretched design which is characterized by powerful structural elements in conjunction with the sharp feature line. This side feature lines defines the upper vehicle body, from the radiator grille across the entire lentgth of the car through to the rear, ending in a boat tail like curve.

Elegance of the Maybach Land Yacht

The strong contrast between the dark blue paintwork in "nautical blue metallic" of the presented model at the `Concours D’Élégance´ in Pebbles Beach and the chrome highlights increases the fascinating relationship between the clearly defined areas with organically shaped fenders and the chrome trim elements, which sit at the top on the edge of the fender as well as in the middle of the trunk lid, where they also incorporate the vertical tail lamps. This benefits the interpretation of the MERCEDES MAYBACH radiator grille, which with its fine, vertical struts accentuates the front end. The grille was inspired by a pinstriped suit. The radiator grille rests on two aerodynamically shaped supports on the outer right and left of the bumper. The newly designed 24-inch light-alloy wheels feature a center lock. This is painted in rose gold and as such reflects the color shade used on all electric vehicle studies from MERCEDES-BENZ.

HISTORY - FRENCH LINE - COMPAGNIE GÉNÉRALE TRANSATLANTIQUE, a review - Part II Belle Epoque
