SILVERSEA a bit of background

When SILVERSEA purchased the former WORLD DISCOVERER from SEMBAWNG, Singapore, and rebuild her into the standard of SILVERSEA CRUISES, they had stretched themselves a bit too far. The vessel was bought overpriced and did cost more as calculated to be rebuilt. When the once German owned vessel emerged as PRINCE ALBERT II it refreshed SILVERSEA as it was their step into the fast growing expedition market. The result was an expansion into that market with two second hand ships that emerged after refreshment as SILVER GALAPGOS and SILVER DISCOVERER. A bit later it was rumored in the `Waterkant Klönschnak´ (gossip from the German North Sea coastline) that SILVERSEA would be interested in purchasing HAPAG-LLOYD Kreuzfahrten (now international branded CRUISES), which was astonishing to me, but did show the recovering, as well the renaming of PRINCE ALBERT II into SILVER DISCOVERER. SILVERSEA rebuilt further for the new market segment SILVER CLOUD, one of the first two SILVERSEA vessels, into a veritable expedition cruise vessel.

The expedition market is bullish as hell and need more and new environmental friendly expedition cruise vessels. This is to be seen by a) huge investments in new tonnage and b) all of them are going to be greener than any of the mass marketeers can ever be at present. The return on investment is not profitable enough with the actual low mass market cruise fares.

SILVERSEA the new ships

The new ship, precautions named SILVERSEA MOON, will be a sister ship of SILVER MUSE, which was delivered in April 2017 from FINCANTIERI in Sestri Ponente (Genova).
with its 40,700 gross tons and a capacity to accommodate 596 passengers on board, SILVER MOON will maintain exactly the small-ship intimacy and spacious `all-suite´ accommodation - okay a great number are luxurious furbished really big staterooms with suite service - which is the pedigree of the SILVERSEA experience.
The new ship will expand SILVERSEA’s existing fleet to 10 ships and will significantly raise the bar in the luxury segment with a great number of enhancements to the onboard experience, while satisfying the uncompromising requirements for comfort, service, and quality of the world’s most discerning travellers.
Among the highlights of the new ship´s "Green Star 3 Design" will be a stand out feature. It is assigned to ships that are designed, built and equipped in order to prevent air and water pollution. The necessity to reduce our carbon footprint is more than ever to be seen, as the warning from former head of NASA´s GODDARD CENTER James Hansen said: "The UN meeting is on the wrong track by seeking a 2°C maximum rise in temperatures, it will be 3°C." Furthermore, the "COMF-NOISE A PAX" and "COMF-NOISE B CREW" are assigned on the basis of the noise levels measured on the ship. Results have shown that new-builds assigned these standards offer the very best levels of comfort to guests on board and will make the onboard life and working conditions of the crew better.
The above mentioned lengthening of SILVER SPIRIT is the result of SILVERSEA´s internal restructuring, and a signal, that not giving bargains in times of crisis was and is the right strategy.
Starting in early March 2018, SILVER SPIRIT will be lengthened by inserting a pre-built 14,94 m (49 ft) long midsection housing in total six Silver Suites, 26 Veranda Suites and two Panorama Suites. Necessary technical upgrades will also be implemented.

The ship’s extensive redesign takes its inspiration from the innovations of SILVERSEA´s new ship, SILVER MUSE. Creative dining concepts will be introduced, as stylish décor enhancements will be made to existing suites/staterooms and throughout the public spaces and outdoor areas, providing an increased level of comfort and spaciousness.

SILVER SPIRIT lengthend and refreshed

"Based on the wonderful feedback from guests sailing onboard our beautiful SILVER MUSE, we believe the comprehensive makeover we have planned for SILVER SPIRIT will enrich the onboard experience and be equally appreciated by guests. They will see many of SILVER MUSE´s innovations and elevated comforts embodied in our re imagined SILVER SPIRIT," said Christian Sauleau, Executive Vice President, SILVERSEA Fleet operations.
SILVER SPIRIT offers a lively, convivial atmosphere for cosmopolitan travellers who enjoy a greater variety of shipboard diversions, yet crave the personalized service and the authentic and “up-close” experiences for which SILVERSEA is known. SILVER SPIRIT is a true definition of SILVERSEA’s heritage, with a modern edge. The vessel amplifies everything that matters: public and personal space, beautiful interior design, superior service, gastronomic cuisine and world-class wines. She also remains small enough to visit both secluded and iconic ports.

Between May 1928 and August 1939 the luxury day express train RHEINGOLD operated between Hoek van Holland and Basel as a FFD Pullman train of DEUTSCHE REICHSBAHN GESELLSCHAFT (DRG) and MITROPA. HISTORY - The CUNARD - WHITE STAR Liner rms QUEEN ELIZABETH (1938-1972)

Over years, in my early youth, the QUEEN ELIZABETH was shaping my mind for the perfect ocean liner, despite having made my first experiences with a liner onboard the HANSEATIC (1), ex EMPRESS OF SCOTLAND, ex EMPRESS OF JAPAN. When leaning at the rail of HANSEATIC entering the port, my eyes where every where and I wished to by a camera, I took all in. And when seeing the QUEEN ELIZABETH with my own eyes, the nice behaving young boy turned into a tomboy, that my grandmére was no longer able to tame ... I did draw quite a lot of looks, back then. Ocean Liners in Movies or Films at Sea (updated Nov 2017)

For liners and the shipping companies movies and films had been a top marketing tool Movies or Films and liners at sea, had been intriguing me since I have read about in my youth in LUXUSLINER - BILDER EINER GROSSEN ZEIT by Lee Server ( THE GOLDEN AGE OF OCEAN LINERS ). But earlier, mot only since my first crossing, I was keen watching movies with liners in it, and disapointed, which was an understatement, when I realized the films have been made in a set ashore in some movie "factory". HISTORY - FRENCH LINE - COMPAGNIE GÉNÉRALE TRANSATLANTIQUE, a review - Part II Belle Epoque

The COMPAGNIE GÉNÉRALE TRANSATLANTIQUE, known since the Belle Epoque as FRENCH LINE in the English speaking world (or TRANSAT or CGT), had its origins in 1861.  by Earl of Cruise E mperor Napoléon III. wanted strengthening the French primacy on the oceans and an adequate mail line for the French mail. ss NORMANDIE 1935-1942 XII - The Most Beautiful Ocean Liner Ever Built

For many, or should I say for "a great many" Ocean Liner Lovers, NORMANDIE is the most beautiful liner ever built. Me, I am among those aficionados.   NORMANDIE was technically decades ahead of time. The vessel got implemented technologies that would have been copied by others, who then claimed to be the first to have. Alternative facts are not a modern days invention of a certain chrétien and his backward oriented entourage ... NORMANDIE´s interior was the peak of ART DECO in France, and was, still is, the peak of chic. Never again any liner, or passenger vessel, except NIEUW AMSTERDAM had been designed exterior and interior that strict in the "guide lines" of the ART DECO (Link in German) movement - as ART DECO is "only" a movement and not a school like BAUHAUS . Therefore the style was in a permanent "move" and development. NORMANDIE, the perfect ocean liner, Le Vaisseau de Lumière, Le Deesse de la Mer - courtsey coloured by Dary...
